OVERVIEW
Just 8.2 miles from the famous Goodwood Race Course in Chichester, The Stables is a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop with the guidance of National Heritage and Chichester District Council.
The Stables is a unique opportunity to own a little bit of history. The property offers a three-storey apartment which was originally the Grooms Quarters, a courtyard, a stable block with all of the original features, a lion's room, boiler room which was to keep the lion (Sabi) warm in the winter months, clock tower and sits on 2.98 acres.
The land to the rear of the property consists of natural woodland including a Redwood tree that was planted in the 1860's and is surrounded by farmland to the right side and an Alpaca farm to the left. The land funnels down to open land with stunning views of the South Downs National Park.
A TIME GONE BY Adsdean House was built in 1850 by famous architect, Norman Shaw. It was updated in 1877 to a gothic style, but that part of the house is now demolished due to deterioration during the war.
The Mountbatten's lived in Adsdean from 1925 - 1946. Adsdean House itself is listed, for its special architectural and historic interest. The Mountbatten's lived at Adsdean until Edwina Louis Wife, inherited Broadlands, a luxurious mansion in Romsey, Hampshire just before World War 2.
During the second world war, Adsdean House was used as a children's evacuation centre by Barnardo's. It stayed like this until 1950. From the 18th century onwards it was not uncommon for those of wealthy origins to bring back exotic plants, and animals from their abroad travels. It is public knowledge that the Mountbatten family had a lion cub called Sabi living with them at Adsdean House in the 30s - hence the lion's den!
THE STABLES & LION'S DEN
The stable block is connected to the apartment and consists of two parts. With amazing original features such as beautiful handcrafted wrought iron partitions, vintage art deco tiles, solid oak beams, troughs and nine original windows.
The second part is known as the Lion's Den where Sabi slept. Adjoining is the boiler room which was created to keep the lion warm. To side is access to the 2.4 acres to the rear of the property.
The scope for this amazing space will require vision, expertise and time. As the development has been declined for equestrian purposes, the next step is get permission for the stables to be connected to the apartment.
